PlayStation 3 might become cheaper due to 45nm Cell Processor

by : Niranjan Thilak  posted February 7, 2008 at 8:39 pm

Sony-playstation-3

IBM has announced their all new 45nm architecture based Cell Processor ,which powers the PlayStation 3 .Currently the Cell processor is being manufactured on 65nm architecture and soon IBM will be shifting to the new 45 nm ones .

The 45nm architecture is surely going to save money for the user , both in terms of power intake and manufacturing cost.Indeed IBM is doing this for Sony the biggest customer for the Cell Processor , which was in fact mainly designed as a coprocessor for Super Computers.

The shrink will make the new chip’s die to be around 34% smaller than the 65 nm architecture and each chip will consume only 60% of the power now taken into those 65 nm processors.Sooner or later Sony will be reducing the price of PS3 because of this.So keep your hopes up. :)
