Intel , Worlds largest commercial microprocessor manufacturer & now having a successful market sales by the help of their Penryn series will be unveiling their new , smallest and the lowest power consuming x86 based chip at the International Solid State Circuits Conference which will be held at San Francisco later this week.

The new Silverthorne based processor made in 45 nm architecture can crank up to 2Ghz clock speed with only 2 Watts of power, making it ideal for running UMPC’s with Windows Vista running on them. Its actual power consumption will be even smaller than that because of active power management. So it can work on power as low as 600 milliwatts.

The device in fact is much similar to the Pentium range. The 25 mm chip can go into a new power management state , C6 deep sleep state in less than 100 microseconds and can come  alive from it in around the same time. Its having a 533 MHz FSB and an optional much more energy efficient CMOS mode.

Though the Silverthorne processor is one of the lowest power consuming Commercial processor chip, there are other Microprocessors which consume lower power than that and to Intel’s dismay they will be unveiled at the same venue. The other processors include a cellular chip from Texas Instruments which has a 840-MHz ARM11 to run applications, a 480-MHz TI C55x DSP core to handle 2G and 3G baseband communications, and a 240-MHz image processor.and it just consumes 500mW at peak operation and normally operates between 100 and 250mW.
