Dual Format drives are the optimal solution for the format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray that has ben taking place for sometime now.Buffalo and I-O Data have announced their new Dual format drives which can playback both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

Buffalo’s Super Multi Blue drive is available in [tag]USB[/tag] 2.0 external and Internal Flavors with writing speed of 2X on BD-RE and 4X on BD-R, the Multi Blue Drive however doesn’t offer writing capability of HD-DVD but can play them.The Multi drive can burn CD’s and DVD’s as well.

Buffalo’s drive is estimated to be priced at ¥47,000 ~£206 for the internal drive.While the I-O Data’s [tag]SATA[/tag] drive is ¥63,500 ~ £279.Availability outside Japan isn’t yet confirmed .
